Lundy Island – where time passes slowly yet there is never enough of it! – lovely account by Karen Jackson of snorkelling with seals during a trip on Lundy Castaway in 2014.

If your into wildlife, stunning scenery, seals, dolphins, puffins, wild rugged walking, snorkelling or diving with the seals and would like a private charter boat that is immaculate clean and comfortable. Lots of drinks and feeling very welcome. Just contact these guys. John and Alan of Lundy Castaway. Top class day guys thanks. We will defiantly be back but for a full two or three day trip next time round as staying on Lundy would be magical. Dug and Sarah x

Hi John,

Thank you so much for such a delightful day! We all had a really great time and I didn’t want the day to end! Seeing Lundy from the sea and all the wildlife it has to offer is certainly very special and the boys were over the moon to swim with the seals! Plus the weather could not have been better! Cant wait to do it again!!

You and Alan were great company and clearly enjoy very much what you do and that reflects on your passengers! We will definitely come again…and sometime very soon I hope! As for photos, taking them from a moving boat through a long telephoto lens is not the best way to get clear shots! However I have attached one of them nesting that is the best of what I took, bearing in mind they were rather a long way from the boat! A few others also that you may like. I have reduced them in size to email, but if you like any of them I could resend at the full resolution if you wish. July 2014

Best regards
Julia

Phil and Becki Charter Lundy Castaway for their secret engagement August 2013

Hi John and Alan

Thank you so much for what was a fantastic weekend.  We felt so well looked after and had the time of our lives aboard Lundy Castaway.  We are still buzzing, and indeed already thinking about when we can revisit Lundy.  We would certainly like to be considered for the “Lundy Splash” in June.

Until next time…

Best wishes

Phil and Becki

Thanks for all the photos you sent us back Phil and Becki. Both Alan and myself are so pleased you enjoyed the few days your chartered Lundy Castaway. Congratulations on your engagement. Pleased we managed to keep it a secret for Becki and it was great to see you in the Mariso Tavern on Lundy with your smiles and a few drinks. We will certainly add your photos to this site as soon as we can. Thanks for sharing them with us. John  and Alan (The Lundy Castaway team)

Phil and Beckie

John,

Just wanted to say thank you so much for our day. It was the most incredible experience, we are all on an absolute high. Harriets highlight was definitely spotting the whale which she has decided was a minke whale-if you could pass that on to Alan .Mark is going to email you over the photos he has of the seals. There are a couple of quite good ones.Once again thank you all so much for our unforgettable experience-hopefully we will be back for another trip soon.

Ali x

Dear Ali and all your family.

Thanks very much for all your kind words.

Pauline Alan and myself all enjoyed having you all on board. We could not have had better weather. Being able to swim with the seals also explore all round the full coast line of the Island and in all the little bays is certainly special with the fantastic wildlife. It’s great to see the puffins coming back to the Island in the numbers that they are. The effort that the Lundy Warden Beccy and all the wildlife staff put in on Lundy is really paying off. Long may Lundy Island keep that magic that in my opinion takes a lot of beating.

We all hoped to see more Dolphins but what a treat to see a Whale.
Many thanks for the thank you present that you gave us all which was really appreciated by the three of us.
We will certainly treat ourselves to a good meal on the Island on our next visit.
Lundy is well worth a visit during the winter period as we chatted about. I am sure you would love the cosy little cottages and the rugged winter walking.Love to see you all back next summer.

Say hello to everyone

Thanks

John

Debbie and Dans day on Lundy July 2013

Dear John & Alan

Wow what a day, great company (husband included), brilliant weather, lovely boat, wonderful island, exhilarating snorkelling (or just swimming for me, I’m such a chicken) and inquisitive seals.

I can’t believe what a superb day it was, thank you for doing the job you do and for still loving it, it wouldn’t of been the same if you both were not there.

I hope you have a great few days with your following charters in this sunshine, and I hope in the future we go again.

Many many thanks

Debbie and Dan

I can see why you love the Island, below are a few of my favourite shots

More guest looking for Puffins on Lundy Island

Dear John, dear Alan, dear Pauline,

Sorry about the delay in sending the photos I promised – it took longer than I thought to sort through them (I think I had close to 700 on my camera)…

Thank you once again for a marvellous day on Lundy Island! We had been looking forward to the trip for a long time, but in hindsight I can honestly say it exceeded our expectations! It was fantastic to have you and your lovely boat all to ourselves – thanks for making us welcome and looking after us so well during the day. Lundy with its wildlife and rugged landscapes is a magical place and we really appreciated the opportunity to enjoy it on a perfect day out! We hope to have another chance some time soon – and maybe get a less blurry photo of my favourite bird 🙂 Best wishes,
Karin, Andrew, Hannah, Mark and Renate Simpson-Parker

PS: Feel free to use any of the pictures as you see fit (if you need a higher resolution, let me know which pic and I’ll mail it separately as the files are rather large)

Roger and Doreen Titmuss. Puffins on Lundy Island.
Dear John and Alan
Roger and I just wanted to thank you for taking us on your boat and for giving us such an excellent day out.  Roger is thrilled with his puffin photos and is looking forward to doing it all again so that next time perhaps he can get some more photos.

The ‘personal touch’ from you and Alan was invaluable and enhanced our boat trip immensely.  We would have no hesitation in recommending your boat and you of course, to others and have in fact done so already through Trip Advisor.
Kind regards.

Just to say thanks for a fantastic trip to Lundy last Monday.  We all really enjoyed the day from start to finish and you couldn’t have been more accommodating – you made us feel really welcome aboard the ‘Willow’. The opportunity to take a dip in the sea with the seals was fab. It was the highlight of our week in Devon and we would certainly recommend it to others.  Definitely the best way to see the island.

Thanks so much, best wishes, Sarah, Neil, Beth and Jack.

PS: A special note from Beth:
I loved every second, and Lundy Island. Beth

Keith, Joss and Family (North Devon) 2012
Dear John and Alan,

Thank you so much for the wonderful trip on Willow to Lundy.  The weather and sea were perfect, a rarity for our unpredictable North Devon weather this year.  The boat was comfortable and spacious and it was a joy to see the dolphins leaping at the bow of Willow. The seals too were a lovely sight to see basking in the sun and our short stay for lunch in Gannets bay was idyllic. We have lived in North Devon over 10 years now and can’t think why we have never thought of a visit before.

We certainly have no qualms in recommending your trip to Lundy to our friends and quests at our holiday let.

Regards from Keith, Joss and Family.

Louise and Friends (London)
We all said that we also enjoyed your company, in fact, we are so glad we went with you rather than the crowded Oldenberg – much better personal service (unlimited tea/coffee/hot chocolate AND brioches!)

We thought we might have got on your nerves with all our questions, but we were genuinely interested in the information you gave so thank you on behalf of all of us.

We are already planning our next trip & will definitely contact you to find out the best times (aka weather!) & we hope to stay for an overnighter so that we can go to the pub.

Best wishes, Louise

A Wonderful day on Lundy (Colin and Sue) Dolphins on the way to Lundy.
Just a quick mail to say thanks for a wonderful day on Lundy.
The passage from Appledore to Lundy was simply fantastic and having the
Dolphins swimming along beside the boat so closely was breath taking. I just
felt like I wanted to lean over the side and touch them.
Seeing the colony of seals on the Eastern side of Lundy was also amazing.
Thank you also for spending so much time with us viewing the seal colony on
the Island.
After you dropped us on the Island we had a fantastic walking just soaking
up the tranquillity of such a peaceful place
Well worth while chartering a small boat that takes you to the special
places on the Island that you would not normally see. We will be back later in the season

Chartered Willow and had a great day. This is simply the best way to get to
Lundy without being on a large boat packed with people. Picking the right
day with this charter boat gave us time to explore the small inlets were the
seals live which we really wanted to see. We also got plenty of time on the
Island to have a good meal and a pint in the Marisco Tavern which was well
worth a visit.
Thanks guys you gave us a day we will not forget.

The Buckinghams – A full weekend on Lundy
During the summer of 2011 we spent a weekend on and around Lundy.
We all had a great time. Saw Dolphins and Seals on both days and even caught
some fresh mackerel for the barbecue. Lundy is just a fantastic place and
being able to charter your own boat to take you to the wildlife is defiantly
a fantastic experience. The evenings on Lundy are simply breathtaking with
the peace and tranquillity. Plus a good meal and drink in the Marisco. Alan
and John who run the boat “willow” (now they have a new boat called Lundy Castaway) could not have given us a better time with constant drinks of coffee and tea and lots of interesting information as we explored many of the breath taking views of the Island while on board

We hope to do another trip in 2013

Tim and friends (Bristol)- A Great Day out on Willow 2012
A great day out from Instow on Willow.
Thanks for a great day and will be back again soon to visit Lundy. We saw
Puffins on the Easterly side plus had Dolphins swimming with us on the 2
hour trip over. Still managed to get five hours plus walking on this
peaceful beautiful place.
We even saw a basking shark on our return journey home. A long day
adventurous and certainly a great day we will always remember.

Birthday Treat
Hi,
Just a quick note to say thank you both very much for a very enjoyable day on (and around) Lundy last week.
Philip really had no idea what his surprise birthday treat entailed and the look on his face when we boarded your lovely boat at Appledore said it all!
The service you provided to us on this special occasion was faultless and I would have no reservations in recommending your boat (and crew)! to friends and family.
The Island truly is a paradise and has not changed one bit since we last visited it all those years ago and even though the weather was not particularly kind to us it did not detract from a splendid day out. (Philip still cannot believe that you have central heating on board)!!!
Thanks again…………………..All the best………………….Philip and Patricia.

John

My mum and dad sent some comments below:

The trip to Lundy by far exceeded our expectations and the weather was simply wonderful.

Although we live in North Devon, we had no idea that a whole day visit to Lundy could be arranged in which to do ones own thing. John and Alan are very genuine and they certainly did their best for us. We would confidently recommend them. To watch you all swimming with the seals is a memory that will be with us for ever.

Georgie (aged 10) thought the swimming with seals was brilliant and rated it higher than last year’s holiday to Florida!

Thankyou for a great day.
Kind regards
James

Dear John,

Many thanks for your email and for the fantastic boat trip to Lundy last week. June 2013

We all really enjoyed the experience and look forward to meeting you again sometime later on in the summer.

Best regards,

Andrew and family.

Trip for BSAC divers on Lundy

Hi John

You beat me to it!  I was about to e-mail to say thanks for a great weekend.  We all had a really great time and loved the boat and relaxed style of the weekend.  The vis was rubbish but in a way that did not affect the enjoyment we got out of the whole trip.  It was a great trip.

As we talked about the only comment we had, and it really wasn’t a problem for us, but may be for others, I think one more rung on hte ladder may help for getting divers back in.  (Slightly  deeper rungs may also be a good idea (if you are changing the ladder anyway) as coming in kitted as we were the rung put quite a bit of pressure on old feet!)

I have tried to put you on trip advisor but it will not let me as you need to be the owner of the “resource” as they call it.  If you follow this link and submit the form they should list you.  Let me know when they do and I will post your first review!
Thanks again for a great weekend, you, Pauline and Alan made it a really great time, although the weather helped as well!
I am sure Paul will be in touch about his trip next year.
Cheers,
Jerry

Thanks for your kind words Jerry you are welcome to come back with us any time. Yes we intend extending the ladder for next season. I intention was only to do a limited number of dive trips and we were aware that maybe an extra rung would be helpful.  Seems now through recommendations we are being asked by the day to do more of our dive trips as divers do like the laid back days we are offering around diving  Lundy. Think we will have to speed up the rung on the ladder. Thanks again for joining us John.

Dear John, Alan, Nicki,
JUNE 2013
We certainly enjoyed the day very much, so thank you again for your hospitality and making us feel so welcome.
I know feedback is useful but in fact I don’t think we could add anything that would have helped our great day any more.  Just from speaking with you though, I think perhaps people should be made even more aware of the reasons you may need to cancel a trip – perhaps when you are arranging the trip you can email/send some information out about what affects the ability to safely land on Lundy (info about currents, weather etc) without putting them off.  Furthermore, I know people are keen to get onto the Island but there is in fact an enormous amount to see around the Island with its wildlife etc – perhaps more emphasis could be made on this as well but it wasn’t something you needed to sell to us!  I still can’t quite get over how many seals and puffins we saw on the East side of the Island and nothing beats watching dolphins swim with a boat – that was a great end to a full day.

Warm regards,

Kate & Kullervo
